In short

An immersive experience is a piece where the audience's position, path and dwell time change what they perceive. That makes duration, looping, spatial sound and failure behaviour design problems rather than technical afterthoughts. ASRcreative approaches this work from composition and production first, and selects technology to serve it.

How the work runs

    Space and audience

    The venue, the path people take through it, how long they stay, what is competing for their attention, and what the space does badly.

    Experience design

    The sequence and its spatial logic: what changes as someone moves, what loops, what resets, and what happens when nobody is there.

  3. 03

    Technical approach

    Displays, projection, audio distribution, playback and control chosen for the venue's constraints — not the other way round.

  4. 04

    Production

    Content produced at the correct format, resolution and duration for the installation itself.

  5. 05

    Integration and testing

    Tested in the real space, at real volume and real light levels, including start-up, shutdown and failure behaviour.

  6. 06

    Handover

    Run instructions, technical documentation and a maintenance plan for the people who will operate it daily.

Composing for dwell time, not for duration

A film has a start and an end and an audience that stays for both. An installation has neither. Someone arrives at an arbitrary moment, stays for ninety seconds or forty minutes, and leaves mid-phrase.

That changes the compositional problem entirely: the piece must be legible from any entry point, must reward a longer stay without punishing a short one, and must loop without an audible seam that turns into a countdown for anyone who notices it.

Sound in a room is not sound in headphones

Rooms have reflections, background noise, hard surfaces and neighbours. A mix that is beautiful on monitors can be unintelligible in a gallery with a tiled floor, and a bass level that feels right at night can be unusable at opening hours.

Spatial and multichannel work is designed for the room it will live in, tested in that room, and given levels that hold across the venue's real operating conditions.

The failure state is part of the design

Installations run for months, unattended, restarted by whoever opens the building. The most visible moment in an installation's life is often the moment something goes wrong.

So the idle state, the start-up sequence, the recovery after a power cut and the behaviour when a source is missing are designed deliberately. A piece that fails gracefully reads as intentional. A piece that fails into a desktop wallpaper reads as abandoned.

  • How the audience arrives, moves and leaves, and how long they typically stay
  • Operating hours and how many hours a day the piece must run
  • Who operates it once installed, and their technical level
  • Constraints: safety, accessibility, noise limits, heritage or venue restrictions
  • Installation and opening dates

What do you need to know about the space before designing an installation?

Dimensions and plans, light conditions through the day, acoustics and background noise, existing infrastructure and power, how the audience arrives and moves through, how long they typically stay, operating hours, and who will run it once installed. Those constraints shape the piece more than any stylistic preference.

How do you stop a looping piece from becoming irritating?
